The launch of ‘fit notes’
‘Fit notes’ are set to become the norm after 6 April 2010. Replacing the Med 3 forms known as sick notes, the Government hopes ‘fit notes’ will help more people stay in work rather than drifting into long term sick leave.
GP’s will have to consider changes which could be made to an employee’s work environment or job to assist their return to work. The GP can comment on whether employees ‘may be fit for work taking account of the following advice.’ The final decision however is left to the employer who will have to consult with employees over any suggested changes and whether they can be accommodated or not.
The new ‘fit notes’ will hopefully provide employers with the ability to sickness absence in a more productive and effective way.
