Equality Bill: new amendments on pregnancy agreed - Workplace Law
9 July 2009
Pam Loch comments in the article:
“The two recent changes to the proposed Equality Bill could have a significant impact not only in employment but also in other sectors.
“If approved, it will be unlawful to discriminate against pregnant women by treating them less favourably at work or in the provision of goods and services. This extension is likely to have a huge impact on the providers of goods and services like retail centres and leisure centres.
“Of greater significance from the employment angle is the decision to allow discrimination claims to be made because of a combination of two protected characteristics. For example a Scottish woman who is stereotyped because her manager does not like Scottish women as opposed to a Scottish man or a female of another national origin. The employee can now bring a combined claim for race and sex discrimination.
"As the next stage for the Bill involves another debate there could be some interesting discussion around these changes and perhaps more to follow.”
